Any potential new signing for the little bull should be aware On the night of Gerald and Annie Eliza’s wedding in Monday 19th August 1912, there were celebrations at the Little Bull. Much beer was drunk and the place was full. One thing led to another and a fight broke out between some of the coal miners who patronized the pub. The outcome was that coal miner; John Glover Hetherington summoned John Hall, James Fisher and brothers Ellis and Percy Wilson for assault. The two Wilson brothers concerned were not related to the Ossett Wilsons in this history. At Ossett Borough Court a week later, Ellis Wilson, coal miner, was fined 5 shillings or 14 days in prison for giving Hetherington a good hiding causing him to be off work for over a week with his injuries. Intriguingly, Percy Wilson would marry Annie Eliza’s widowed mother Sarah a few years later and both Ellis and Percy Wilson lived at the Little Bull in the 1920s. The story of the “Miner’s Fracas at Ossett Common” made the Ossett Observer and the national newspapers the next week with a write-up in the “News of the World”. One can only imagine what Gerald’s parents thought about all of this as they filed for the morning service at the New Wesleyan Chapel.
so beware

Any more relevant information mr historian before this new striker is revealed? wouldn't want to sign anyone that wasn't aware of the full facts about the bull, might have to ship them up to the brewers if their not completely satisfied with all the information you provide! Razz

Ossett Teddies Football Team 1910

Ossett Teddies football team were recruited from members of the Ossett Temperance movement who met at the Temperance Hall on Illingworth Street in Ossett. The guy on the right with the suit and the moustache is my grandfather, Gerald Emil Wilson (1887-1971) who also played for Ossett Teddies.

The Temperance movement was a national crusade to rid Britain of the 'curse' of alcohol. My grandfather took the 'pledge' and drank 'water bright' all his life. He never took alcohol, despite some time as stand-in 'landlord' at the Little Bull, Ossett, when, in 1911, his mother-in-law, Sarah became a widow for the second time, after her husband, Lee Summerscales, the landlord at the Little Bull died aged 58.

The Ossett Temperance football team was formed early in the 20th Century and played at various grounds in Ossett, for example in 1907/08 at the top of Wesley Street. Sadly, the football team seems to have disappeared altogether as the Temperance movement faded away after the end of WW1.

Ossett - The Little Bull Hog Roast

1911 picture of a Hog Roast at the Little Bull public house, Teal Street, Ossett. The two ladies are Annie Green and her mother Sarah Summerscales, the landlady of the Little Bull who had been widowed from her second husband Lee Summerscales. The guys in the background include Gerald Wilson. Many of the patrons of the Little Bull at this time were miners at Roundwood Colliery.
